Finding a purpose in life doesn’t come easily for everyone. Though many people want to have a meaningful life, a lot of times, they find themselves off-track. They’re not living their true purpose. Or sometimes, they’re living their purpose but they’re not aligned with it. Let me share with you how one encounter reconnected me to my dreams and life purpose.
Finding a Purpose in Life and Living for It
Finding Your Life Purpose but Getting Off-Track
Have you ever felt like you’re living your purpose but you’re off track or out of alignment with your purpose?
One time, I was in New Jersey phoning a potential client. I knew going into the conversation, the client didn’t seem aligned with the type of person I want to work with. After the phone call, my energy was low and I felt off-track.
The day after, I had a text message from a friend. He told me, “I have somebody to introduce you to. Are you free to talk tonight?” I replied to him and said, “I’ll reach out to you tomorrow.”
While I was feeling off-track, I also felt my friend might introduce me to someone who can get me back on track.
The Phone Call That Changed My Life
So I immediately texted my friend and asked, “Hey, who’s the person you wanted to introduce me to?” And he replied, “Do you know of James Barbour?”
I didn’t know who James Barbour was so I told him, “No, I don’t know James.”
Then he filled me in. James was the lead star in The Phantom of the Opera, which is one of the longest-running Broadway shows. He had reached out to my friend because he wanted to speak with me.
And I said, “Oh, wow, that’s amazing.” His gesture touched and flattered me, so I agreed to speak with him.
My friend introduced James and I. Within 20 minutes, we were on the phone. The stars aligned for us and our goals.
As we spoke, James went into his story. He started telling me about his life and his journey and we clicked right away. My energy went from being off-purpose to becoming realigned with my vision and my purpose.
The Vision I Held on To
— Ted McGrath (@ted_mcgrath) April 3, 2018
The crazy thing is, I was holding on to a vision before I spoke with James. I wanted to work with celebrities, aside from the ones coming into my life. I’ve been saying how celebrities are big opinion leaders in the world. Like a life coach or speaker, they also have a message inside of them. They have an impact, plus, they already have a community.
The number one fear celebrities have is they’re not going to be relevant one day. A celebrity is only as powerful as their community. They’re able to share their message and create an impact.
Goals, Passion, and Talents Align
So I’ve been holding on to my vision of working with celebrities and then I find myself on the phone with James. In turn, James wants what I have. He has a message and story inside of him and he wants to get it out to millions. He needed my system. He wanted to understand and learn it from me because as he affirmed, I’ve “done it.”
The prospect of our partnership excites me. Then I revealed to him, “The funny thing is, you have what I want. Because I want to learn from you. You are the lead in a Broadway show. Now you don’t know this about me, but I have a theater show. I have a one-man show where I play 15 different characters from my life. I’ve been holding on to this because I’ve been touring with it for the past years. The thing is, it’s not what I want. I want to go big with my one-man show and I need the expertise from somebody like you.”
Finding a Purpose in Life and Connecting with Others for a Greater Purpose
So there we were, two stars aligned. I was in New Jersey when we phoned, and James was in New York for a show. I happened to be coming to New York the day after for a family get-together. James took the opportunity to invite me for dinner so we could connect.
When we met, I found out he was such a nice guy. We had a great conversation and we realized we’re going to work on something together.
That leads to another phone call after our dinner. We discussed our vision and how part of what we’re co-creating will help people live their dreams.
I was set to tour with my theater show and James committed to helping me get into theaters in Los Angeles. He agreed to coach me and help me create a structure for my show. As we tour, we would help other artists and open up platforms to them.
We would train other artists and teach them different skill sets we know. I would help people create audiences.
Live A Purposeful Life
What started off as a text message and a phone call turned into a global vision. It’s a vision with a goal to take this message to millions of people in the world.
Right now, I want to encourage and inspire you. If you’re holding a vision of what you want in your life, keep holding on to it. People will show up. As long as you keep communicating it and you’re consistent with it, the stars will align. Opportunities will align. Dreams do come true!
If you’re feeling off-purpose today, what can you do to get back on track? How can you realign yourself with what you’re destined to do?
